A Day’s Ride From Here – Volume I and Volume II

His books relate stories that I have heard over the years, but his presentations are more complete and concise, which will be very important to future historians. These three books are worthy of being on your bookshelf. -- Ross McSwain – Staff Reporter, Author and Historian

John Simpson Chisum - The Cattle King of The Pecos Revisited

Caldwell has not only written a fine, evenly balanced history of a complex man, he has done an excellent job of encapsulating the history of the Lincoln County War, arguably the most violent in the history of he West.

The author has been researching Chisum for many years and has done his homework. He’s combed the archives and used reliable sources including the leading authority on Chisum, Dr. Harwood Hinton. The reader will also find pages of helpful notes, appendixes, bibliography and index at the end. -- Marshall Trimble, Arizona's Official State Historian

Trimble is one of the state's most popular speakers and performers. He’s also an author with more than twenty books to his credit, an educator, lecturer, consultant, folk singer and stage performer.

“This is an absorbing biography, well written and deeply researched, and as might be expected from a Lincoln County War authority it is especially strong in its coverage of Chisum’s behind-the-scenes activity as a business associate of the lawyer Alexander McSween who was in turn a business associate of John Tunstall, whose murder in February 1878, sparked the Lincoln County War.” --

A Day’s Ride From Here - Volume I: Mountain Home, Texas

“…Cliff Caldwell, a member of WWHA and a diligent researcher, has done a fine job putting together the hitherto untold historical tales he recalls. This book is a useful reference work that will surely engage anyone interested in mayhem, manhunts, bad blood and banditry, a ramble through the murkier backwaters of Texas History. Caldwell reminds us yet again how violent and unpredictable were the western frontier and the men who lived there…” -- Frederick Nolan – Author and Historian
Wild West History Association Journal: Volume III. Number 2. April 2010

Guns of The Lincoln County War

“....is thoroughly researched, well written and organized, and is complete with a glossary of terms and appendix detailing gun manufacturing types by date and quantity, and an index. You don’t have to be a gun enthusiast or collector to enjoy Clifford Caldwell’s book Guns of The Lincoln County War. Even if you’re not interested in the Lincoln County War, this is a fine reference book on some of the more important Old West firearms and a valuable addition to your research bookshelf.--Wild West History Association February 2010 - By Jim Fulbright

Cliff Caldwell's work on the Lincoln County War is fun to read and informative, especially for anyone breaking into the field. I heartily recommend it. -- Noted Historian and Author, Drew Gomber

Caldwell is a thorough researcher in the manner of the ardent buff (compared with the professional historian, both as described by Richard Maxwell Brown in “No Duty To retreat”), and has clearly spent countless hours in detailed study of about finer points of genealogy, geography, and other arcane matters related to the Lincoln County War.  He adds a few new details to the genealogical studies of major and minor figures on both sides of the conflict.  There is a proper balance between cattlemen and cowboys, which is refreshing, as in much of the literature the cowboys have too often dominated over the arguably more important ranchers.--Review by Mark Dworkin for the Wild West History Association
